Euglandina rosea (Eugros), Rosy wolfsnail, is a cannibal snail introduced to Hawaiʻi. They are one of the top predators of our kāhuli. The Army Natural Resources Program, Oʻahu (ANRPO) conducts quarterly sweeps at the various snail predatory exclosure fences. The Hāpapa location recently had a few excursions leading to more Eugros sweeps.
PROJECT: We will spend the day sweeping the exclosure in search of any sign of Eugros – live or dead – shells, eggs, whole individuals.
HIKING TIME: 2 to 3 hours (round trip)
DIFFICULTY: High; serious elevation gain. Not for the acrophobic! Includes 45 minutes – 1 hour of uphill hiking along a very narrow ridge with steep dropoffs. This hike is very strenuous and is mostly hiking up a vertical.
WHAT TO BRING: Long pants, long sleeve shirt and shoes with good traction. Please review the suggested packing list.
Project tools and gloves will be provided.
